Portable Oxygen Cylinders

1. PURPOSE

Small oxygen cylinders are made available for patients who need portability.

2. EQUIPMENT:

A. Oxygen cylinder.

B. Pressure regulator, contents gauge and flow meter.

C. Nasal cannula or mask.

D. Carrying Case or Bag.

3. PROCEDURE

A. Place the end of the wrench on the cylinder valve and turn it slowly (S-L-O-W-L-Y) COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until you see the needle on the pressure gauge move.

B. Turn the dial at the end of the regulator clockwise until the indicator registers the proper liter flow.

C. Put on the cannula or mask and adjust for comfort.

D. When finished using the oxygen, remove the cannula or mask, place the end of the wrench on the cylinder valve and turn CLOCKWISE, watch the contents gauge drop to ZERO, then turn the dial at the end of the regulator to OFF.

E. Make sure to check the gauge each time you use your oxygen and reorder refills before it is empty, especially during bad weather.

4. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

A. If you hear a hissing noise or notice that your tank is emptying too quickly, the tank may be leaking.

B. DO NOT smoke near cylinders.

C. DO NOT allow grease or oil to come in contact with the cylinder, regulator or accessory parts.

D. DO NOT allow an open flame within 5 feet of the oxygen equipment.

E. DO NOT store cylinders in your vehicle trunk.

F. If you store cylinders in your car, leave the window cracked open to prevent oxygen accumulation.

G. DO NOT place the unit near radiators or other sources of heat such as fireplaces and kerosene heaters.
